Your recovery data is sensitive, and we treat it that way. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the control you have over it. SoberBuddy is a self-help tool and does not provide medical advice.

This Privacy Policy describes how SoberBuddy ("SoberBuddy," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the SoberBuddy mobile application and website (together, the "Service").

1. Information we collect

Information you provide

Account information: your email address and display name when you create an account.
Sobriety & recovery data: the substances you choose to track, sober-since dates, streaks and resets, daily check-ins, moods, and any notes you write. This is health-related information you choose to share.
Chat messages: the messages you send to the AI Buddy companion.
Your reasons ("Your Why"): the motivations you select or write during onboarding.

Information collected automatically

Device & usage data: app version, device type, operating system, and basic interaction events used to keep the app working and improve it.
Diagnostics: crash reports and performance data.

Subscription information

When you subscribe to SoberBuddy Pro, your purchase is processed by Apple or Google through their in-app purchase systems. We receive confirmation of your subscription status but never see or store your full payment card details.

Provide the Service — track your streaks, calendar, insights, and milestones.
Sync your data securely across your devices.
Personalize your daily motivation and insights.
Power the AI Buddy companion (see Section 3).
Send notifications you've enabled, such as daily motivation and milestone reminders.
Maintain security, prevent abuse, and fix problems.
Comply with legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your recovery data or chat messages for advertising.

3. The AI Buddy chatbot

When you chat with Buddy, your messages are sent to our AI provider, OpenAI, to generate a response. We send only what's needed to produce a helpful reply. Buddy is designed to be supportive and to direct you to professional or emergency help when appropriate. Buddy is not a doctor, therapist, or crisis service and does not provide medical advice.

We share information only with service providers who help us operate the Service, under agreements that require them to protect your data:

Supabase — secure database, authentication, and cloud sync.
OpenAI — powers the AI Buddy chatbot.
Apple & Google — subscriptions, and delivery of push notifications.
Diagnostics/analytics providers — crash reporting and privacy-respecting usage analytics.

We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the public.

5. Storage & security

Your data is stored on secure cloud infrastructure and protected with per-user access controls (Row Level Security), so only you can access your records. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. A copy is also kept on your device so the app works offline. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information using industry-standard safeguards.

6. Your rights & choices

Access & export: you can view and export your data from within the app.
Delete your account: you can permanently delete your account and associated data from within the app at any time.
Notifications: you control notifications in the app and in your device settings.
Regional rights: depending on where you live (e.g., the EEA/UK under GDPR, or California under the CCPA/CPRA), you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal information. Contact us to exercise these rights.

7. Data retention

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete your personal data from our active systems, except where we are required to retain certain records to comply with legal obligations.

8. Children

SoberBuddy is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will delete it.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
